The animal would feel immense pain and this disease usually occurs in horses who are older than five years.

Its always better to take preventive measures beforehand so try to maintain your horse and his health and inspect his feet as often as you can so that you could prevent such thing from happening. You are responsible for the health and well being of your animal so make sure you don't let him suffer and it can only be prevented if you closely monitor his overall health and condition of his feet.
