Drug addiction is a very dangerous and complex disease that is caused by abuse of drugs. There are many harmful consequences of drug addiction to the abusers and the people around them. Quitting substance use disorder can be a very difficult process and hence the addict must have a very strong will. Treatment of drug addiction helps in dealing with effects. In relation to this, the following is an article on treatment for heroin addiction.

Feeble immune systems, gum inflammation, low capacity in sex, impotence, menstruation disturbance in women and risk of transmitting deadly contagious diseases through use of the same needle-like AIDS among others are the life threatening effects of heroin addiction. Due to this and many other reasons, it is of great importance to treat the addiction of heroin.

Behavioral and pharmacological treatments are the most commonly used for this treatment. Prescribed medicines are used in the pharmacological treatment to help the heroin addicts decrease its use, decrease its cravings, treatment program retention, minimization of the criminal activities and helps in the withdrawal stage to deal with symptoms like pain, vomiting, diarrhea and nausea. Hence they play an important part in the treatment procedure.

The behavioral therapy or treatment can occur in an outpatient setting or a rehab center. The initial step to this kind of treatment is the withdrawal or detoxification process. Intake of heroin is completely avoided in this stage and it leads to the patient experiencing the withdrawal symptoms. The addicts are prescribed some medications to help fight those severe symptoms and within less time possible.

The second step is called the therapy stage in the behavioral treatment process. It involves counseling sessions to the patient where they are made aware of how to deal with people or situations that may make them feel the need to use it again. The third and last step to this process is the maintenance stage where the counselors make follow-ups to the patients to make sure they maintain a heroin-free life.

Treatment of this addiction can lead to reduction in the spread of dangerous diseases like AIDS and Hepatitis C which is caused by the needle sharing and risky sexual behaviors in the heroin addicts. This helps save a lot of lives and prevent deaths. It helps cut down on crime as most crimes are committed under the influence of drugs. This also helps the community as it stays peaceful.

This treatment provides both long term and short term benefits to the user like improvement of health, freedom from heroin dependency and addiction among others. By treating this addiction makes the former addicts live a better, productive and happy life. Their families too benefit from this as they are also counseled on drug addiction and how to deal and help the addicts in their families.

To sum up, we should promote heroin addiction treatment and encourage the abusers to seek treatment as if affects widely the users and the people around them. It is the duty of everyone to help in fighting against drug addiction as it is a deadly disease. Most importantly, prevention is better than cure. We should keep that in mind.
