Basic Information On Black Mental Health

By Jerry Nelson

It is not unusual for one to have mental illness. Problems we experience in our day to day lives are a contributing factor. Some of these problems like money worries, stress and family issues could affect our health. There are more problems affecting black mental health including those of white and black mixed race usually anxiety and depression.

Living in a country where the cost of living is high and with no job can be depressing. Most of these black people live in a white country without having permanent jobs and under poor living conditions. Some slowly sink into depression. They get scared of seeking for help in fear of losing their jobs. Others cannot open up to their friends since they want to keep it a secret.

Colored people who move into a white dominant land can easily fall into depression. They have to learn to put up with different cultures. The kids face it rough in schools where they go through bullying and racial segregation. Most of these kids cannot tell their parents what they are going through. By the time the parent realizes something is wrong the kid could be in the worst depression stage.

Cases of mental health are not as common in the African countries as they are in the blacks living in white countries. This means that it is essential for those families in white countries to speak up when something goes wrong. It helps one to take care of their health as well as their families and friends. Getting the required care early saves people from trouble.

There are many organizations willing to help people with mental issues. Most blacks in white countries fall into depression and never seek help. They are scared of feeling weak and accepting that something is wrong. Others fear the organizations could judge them in relation to religious beliefs or ethnicity background. It is important to speak when there is a problem instead of suffering in silence.

No matter how many stages have been taken to fight against racism blacks still experience it. They lack better jobs because they are black. They lack the best education and best homes such that some live on the streets. Some result into crimes and use drugs trying to escape reality. Being in this state and using drugs worsens the situation causing some serious these illnesses.

Black adults in white countries living below poverty line are more likely to experience these issues compared to those living above it. They feel more hopelessness and sadness with most of them trying to commit suicide. They are prone to be termed as victims of major crimes compared to the white people. This would result into post-traumatic stress which would cause other issues.

Most of these people suffering from any mental condition are not violent. When someone knows a friend who could be suffering from any condition they should be very supportive. Let them know they can talk to you when they need help. A lot of black people result into too much drinking to run away from their problems thus fall into depression.
