The main responsibility of a doctor who deals with the tooth is to use digital radiography to diagnose patients and attend problems associated with teeth, gums and other parts of the mandible. They can also offer advice on the food that patients should take to avoid oral disorders. They have various duties that include the removal of decay from teeth of the patient and filling their cavities, repairing fractured teeth or removing them entirely. Dentists who have chosen private practice to oversee various rules, for example, purchasing equipment, bookkeeping, and supplies.

Most dental surgeons are general practitioners who can comfortably handle some teeth problems. There are a few who have decided to specialize in some specialties that include oral pathologists, Orthodontists, exodontists, pediatric dentists, endodontists, prosthodontics, and dental public health specialists that are involved in promoting and preventing dental diseases in the society.

An excellent dental surgeon should possess some qualities that will help him/her to relate well to his patients or clients. Some of these qualities are organizational skill, listening skills, detail oriented, leadership skills and proficient communication skills so that he can effectively relate with his patients and other doctors. He should be very efficient with his hands and be patient because he must work on his patients for long hours.

To become a dental practitioner, one must attend a degree program in a recognized dental school. Students majoring in science such as chemistry and biology might increase their chances of being accepted into a dental school. College undergraduates who wish to major in dentistry usually take the Dental Admission Test (DAT) so that they can be considered for intake.

To qualify as a specialized tooth practitioner, one must attend an additional training program in the specialty they wish to take. This training usually takes two to four years. General tooth doctors do not require this extra training as they do not want to be specialists. Dentists who wish to research or teach full time, spend additional two or four years in advanced dental training.

Teeth surgeons must obtain a working license in their municipalities. The license requirements are different in each city, therefore, it is important for them to be aware of the rules. A tooth doctors should have a degree certification from a recognized dental school. He/she should also pass the National Board Dental Examination to be qualified. Any physician who wishes to have a private practice in the given specialties should obtain a license for that particular field.
