Without An Obstetrician Los Angeles Women May Have Problems During Pregnancy

By Christopher Edwards

There can be little doubt that the nine months during which a woman carries an unborn baby, nurturing a whole new life, is one of the most special times in the lives of all women. It seems as if pregnant women glow from within. The very idea that it is an individual growing inside there can be both exciting and scary. But pregnancy is also a time when it is wise to be very careful, but when helped by an obstetrician Los Angeles expectant mothers have little to fear.

Obstetricians and gynaecologists are not the same thing, as many people seems to think Obstetricians are exclusively concerned with the care of pregnant women, their unborn babies, the birth process itself and the care of mother and child directly after birth. Gynaecologists, on the other hand, are concerned with the general condition of the female reproduction system, whether they are pregnant or not. The two fields overlap in many ways, however.

The majority of pregnant women never see obstetricians. They rely on their house doctor and when it is time for the birth, it is handled by the local GP or a midwife. In many cases the birth takes place without any assistance whatsoever. This is fine, as long as there are no problems or complications. In such cases a general practitioner simply will not be able to handle the emergency.

Obstetricians routinely perform numerous tests at every stage of the pregnancy. With these advanced tests, it is possible to identify potential conditions, defects ad other problems at a very early stage. In many cases these problems can be solved before they have a chance to develop into more serious issues. It is not uncommon to perform micro surgery on unborn babies either. Modern technology even allows obstetricians to identify potential genetic defects.

The most important benefit of seeing obstetricians as soon as pregnancy occurs is that potential problems can be identified and treated at an early stage. It is true that most pregnancies are concluded without incident, but it is also true that even minor complications can quickly become emergencies. There are numerous recorded cases where obstetricians saved the lives of mother, baby or even both.

Obstetricians will manage the actual birth and the period immediately following the birth. His sole concern is to make sure that both the baby and mother is healthy and well. After this short period, he will not be involved any longer. The ongoing care of the mother and baby is then left in the hands of other doctors and specialists such as gynaecologists and paediatricians.

Obstetricians can also be of great value to women that struggle to become pregnant. Modern science has made it possible to help previously barren women to conceive and to give birth. This is a grey area where some women consult their gynaecologists with problems getting pregnant while others prefer to see obstetricians. That is why many specialists are qualified in both fields, allowing them to deal with the full range of issues related to the female reproductive system.

The very idea that a baby may be born disabled or desperately ill simply because a relatively minor problem was not detected early enough prompt many women to rather pay the hefty fees of obstetricians rather than take a chance. After all, it is an entirely new life that grows in the womb. It deserves the best possible care.
