Why Music Therapy In Maine Keeps On Growing

By Mattie Knight

There are many different types of psychologists that specialize in a number of different areas. Music therapy in Maine has been effective in helping a lot of people with different conditions cope in life. This relates to those with autism, folks with dementia and Alzheimer's as well as people who are depressed and anxious. There are many more instances where music can be helpful in therapy.

The average person will automatically see this as an effective way in lifting the mood. So many people turn to a certain type of music when they are feeling low, depressed or they find that they can't sleep at night. The tranquil melody or light beat in the background has a soothing tone which can create a sense of calm in one's life.

Music has a powerful impact in how the brain is able to function. In doing so, other body parts are also able to improve should the patient be suffering from some sort of pain. It affects the whole brain, working on cognitive processes, physical needs as well as attending to the emotions that one may be struggling with.

Different techniques are used, using a variety of instruments, where the clients can get involved in playing as well as simply listening. This will depend on the client and the issue at hand. Someone with Dementia, for example may simply want to listen to a piano playing in the background every morning. This will help them feel less agitated and angry. This often happens when you become forgetful.

Children enjoy getting involved and playing different musical instruments. In the case of those who have been traumatized, it can be a great way of expressing oneself. People start to express themselves through the music and are able to feel a sense of freedom as they go through with the process. It is not always easy for a child or trauma patient to talk as freely with a therapist.

Folks who suffer with various types of sleeping problems find that music is also an essential ingredient. Only having a couple of hours of sleep every night, and being exhausted the rest of the day can be draining. Falling asleep with tranquil music playing in the music is something that has helped a lot of people deal with this problem.

Children with autism have also known to have transformed and developed with the use of music therapy. Therapists use the appropriate musical instruments with these kids, helping them with their communication skills, and in doing so there is often a development with both verbal and non-verbal communication patterns.

Therapists work in a number of different environments where their interests lie and where there is a demand. Often you will find them in a drug rehab, which is helpful because it adds more of a variety into the program. They may work at hospitals with patients who have various disorders as well as at schools where they will come in on a regular basis. Music therapists work in a group setting as well as on a private one on one basis.
