By Raymond Meyer

A bariatric surgery is one type of surgical operation that are often done on people who have obesity. The adjustable gastric band and the sleeve gastrectomy are two of the most common types of surgeries for weight loss. According to a research, these two procedures causes loss of weight in long term, recovery for diabetes, improvement of the factors in cardiovascular risks, and as well as to reduce mortality.

These procedures are only recommended to obese people who have at least 40 of their BMI or body mass index. These are also recommended for people with 35 of BMI and those who have some serious medical conditions like diabetes. So this means that any person who has a BMI of 30 or more may possibly undergo gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy surgeries.

The adjustable gastric band is often called as the lap band. This is procedure where in there is a silicone device placed around the stomach, on its top portion in order to treat obesity. The main purpose of doing this is for slowing the consumption of food, and as a result, the amount of food that is consumed will be reduced.

People may sustain and achieve weight loss. Sustaining and achieving it can be done through the reduction of appetite, proper selection of food healthy options, limitation of the food intake, and lastly is the progression of food when being digested from top to the bottom parts. However, methods like this may be done only for people doing the proper exercise and proper diet before having the operation.

According to a research, this surgery type is not an easy option for those people that suffer from obesity. And the reason for this is due to the drastic steps being performed and the involvement of severe risks and pain like some other surgical operation types. However, the procedure is less invasive and patients can remain in the hospital for just a few days after the surgery. Some other advantages include faster recovery, have smaller scars, and lesser pain unlike other methods.

One last advantage is it does not involve staples and removing some parts of the stomach and also, the intestines are not moved. And since the materials used are biocompatible, it can remain in the body without casing any harm. However, not all obese patients are candidates to this. Those who are extremely obese and who already have undergone abdominal surgeries may be required to have open approach.

The sleeve gastrectomy is the other kind of surgical procedure where in weight loss is performed through removing large stomach parts near the curvature area. By this, the stomach size will be reduced for about 15 percent of normal size. And thus, resulting to a sleeve or tube like form.

This type of procedure for loss of weight is a very common option in New York. In this procedure, there is a longitudinal removal of stomach parts in the antrum for about 5 to 6 centimeters to the fundus which is close to the cardia. The ideal size of the remaining stomach is approximately 150 milliliters.

This type of surgery can also be applied to both adolescents and children. According to some studies, it causes a large amount of weight loss to them when they reach the age of 5 to 21 years old. This surgery also causes complications like blood clots and infections, esophageal pain, vomiting, sleeve leaking, and many more.
